Yesterday morning, the 2023 Global Energy Transition Forum kicked off in the Beijing Future Science City in Changping District, with the theme of “Energy Security, Green Transition”. Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment, and Yin Yong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and Mayor of Beijing, delivered speeches, with the latter announcing the opening of the event.

Addressing the forum, Huang Runqiu said that since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, China has taken tackling climate change as an important focus for promoting eco-conservation and high-quality development under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization. China pursues a green and low-carbon path to development that prioritizes ecological conservation and is accelerating green and low-carbon energy transition. We should study and implement the guiding principles of the National Conference on Ecological and Environmental Protection by promoting green and low-carbon development in our economy and society. As we press ahead with the energy revolution, a clean, safe, low-carbon and highly efficient energy system will be established to upgrade our energy mix at a faster pace. With a focus on key areas and industries, we will carry out collaborative pilot programs to cut pollution and carbon emissions at multiple levels and in different areas, delivering better outcome through coordinated control. Furthermore, we will ramp up research and development in green and low-carbon technologies and improve systems and mechanisms in related sectors, as we strive for major breakthroughs in such technologies. As the world moves toward green and low-carbon development, all parties should continue mutually beneficial cooperation and mutual learning, strengthen exchanges in this field, and work together to build a green and low-carbon world.

Yin Yong said that Beijing has achieved remarkable results in advancing green and low-carbon transition by resolutely implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization and the new energy security strategy. As a new round of revolution in energy science and technology and industrial transformation gathers pace, there will be more opportunities to advance energy transition as well as higher requirements for secure and stable energy supply. Focused on the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, Beijing will build itself into a green city by balancing energy security and green development, and strive to play an exemplary role in the country’s energy transition. The city will steadily improve its energy mix by building a new type of power system and promote green and low-carbon ways of work and life with a focus on key areas. In addition, the city will become an incubator of innovative energy technologies and continue to plan for the development of hydrogen energy and other energy sources critical to the future. To ensure secure and reliable energy supply, we will develop a high-standard system for energy production, supply, storage and sales, thus creating a new pattern of energy security in the capital. At the same time, we welcome scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors from home and abroad to start businesses, invest and innovate in Beijing, joining us in creating a bright future of green development.

After the opening ceremony, the leaders visited exhibition areas of companies including Huawei, CHN Energy Group and LONGi, where they saw the scientific and technological achievements on display. A series of programs will be held during the event, including the main forum, nine parallel forums, and signing and unveiling ceremonies.

Li Jinfa, President of China Geological Survey, Zhang Laiming, Vice President of the Development Research Center of the State Council, and Zhuang Shuxin, Secretary-General of SASAC, delivered speeches at the event. Tang Guangfu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yu Bing, General Manager of CHN Energy Group, Jin Wei, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Beijing, and Mu Peng, Secretary-General of the Beijing Municipal Government, attended the forum.
